An architecture student at Dalhousie University is proposing a new look to the St. John’s Harbour.
Cynthia Williams, who is originally from this province, has submitted a proposal for a completely redesigned waterfront in the capital city as part of her Masters degree.
In her design, Williams suggests the removal of the harbourfront fence and removal of on-street parking alongside Harbour Drive.
Instead, she proposes an idea similar to the pedestrian mall that includes a large boardwalk for pedestrians with a number of amenities such as a wellness spa, fitness studio and market.
Williams says the design is meant to accommodate the needs of the community, rather than fulfilling tourism needs.
Photos of her vision have been met with positive feedback online and hopes it will be considered in the future.
She says the idea has worked for other cities like in Vancouver, where an industrial wasteland was transformed into a harbourside pier. Williams says there is potential for it to happen in St. John’s, but push from the community is needed to make the idea a reality.
