The New Jersey Devils clinched their first playoff berth since 2018 Saturday night and Newfoundland’s Dawson Mercer played no small part in the celebration.
Mercer’s rocket of a one-timer to the top corner gave the Devils a 3-1 lead en route to a 5-3 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators.

While the goal was pretty, the screen in front of the goalie by teammate Timo Meier was arguably prettier, something Mercer acknowledged in a post-game interview with reporters.
“I told him on the bench I didn’t even see the goalie. I just didn’t want to hit him.”
Mercer now has 23 goals and 28 assists for 51 points.
