Virtually all 15 employees of Smith’s Ambulance in Whitbourne have found employment in the region with another operator, and will not have to leave the province.
The company was blindsided a couple of weeks ago when the provincial government, without notice, cancelled their contract for what it saw as violations. Smith’s is taking government to court.
Cancellation of the contract resulted in all paramedics being let go but owner Wade Smith says Fewer’s is going to pick up the slack. Fewer’s will be using the laid-off paramedics to service the southern Avalon.
He says Fewer’s will be covering the Ferryland area with all of his staff. He says the employees have agreed to stay to see how things work out but if the future is not there for Smith’s Ambulance, then they’ll move on.
