A St. John’s man charged with first-degree murder in Toronto is due back in court on Friday.
Twenty-two-year-old Jordan O’Brien-Tobin is accused of stabbing a teenager to death at a subway station in the city’s west end on Saturday night.
Police say the 16-year-old boy was attacked out of the blue while sitting on a bench near the Keele subway line around 9 p.m.
Bystanders reportedly tried to stop the bleeding but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Tobin-O’Brien was arrested a short time later, and made a brief appearance in bail court on Sunday.
He was returned to a detention centre pending his next appearance on Friday morning.
Toronto Police declined comment on the case, but it is known he was wanted by the RNC here, for breaching a previous release condition.
That’s part of a lengthy criminal record in this province—including thefts, threats, fraud, property damage and arson—as well as recent convictions for assault and uttering threats in Ontario.
It’s believed O’Brien-Tobin moved to Toronto two years ago but police say he had no current address in the city.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Star is reporting that O’Brien-Tobin was released on probation two weeks ago for several offences, including sexually assaulting a Toronto woman.
Court records also indicate he had been ordered to undergo counselling for mental health issues and substance abuse.
