Some positive news for protesting crab harvesters in the province today.
Federal MP Seamus O’Regan says 3L inshore crab harvesters will get a 1,250 tonne increase to their total allowable catch this season.
He says Federal Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray has committed that DFO will complete the 3L single stock science evaluation before the 2024 TAC decision.
The FFAW says DFO’s management plan for the snowcrab fishery includes an 8.4 per cent overall increase.
The union says the province’s snowcrab resource remains healthy overall, and the increase given to 3L inshore this year is representative of increases given to other fishing areas in 2022 and is reflective of positive science.
They note that over 100 volunteer hours were put into the Precautionary Approach Working group this year and while the decision didn’t come without resistance, “in the end harvesters were heard loud and clear.”
