The province’s Chief Veterinary Officer says avian flu is continuing to circulate in wild bird populations in the province, and it is spreading to mammals that feed on dead birds.
At least two sick foxes, which had been removed from the wild by well-meaning residents, have tested positive in preliminary testing for avian flu.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu can spread to mammals, including humans. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Beverly Dawe says that’s why people should never touch, remove or interfere with sick, dead or dying wildlife.
She says while there have been no positive cases reported in Canada among humans, those who have been in contact with infected animals are reported to Public Health for follow-up and possible treatment if necessary. “So there’s certainly significant reason to stay away from wildlife and not handle wildlife.”
