Terra Bruce productions are forging ahead with the restoration of two historic theatres—one at home, and one abroad.
The theatre company purchased the 350 seat Majestic Theatre in downtown St. John’s last year, and renovations have been forging ahead, despite what Chief Operating Officer Bob Hallett calls “no end of complications”.
He says the first floor is almost complete and are well into renovations of the auditorium. Once the snow melts, the work will begin on the exterior of the building. Hallett says they are on track to be open this summer.
The company is also looking to make an impact on the musical theatre scene nationally, purchasing the Regent Theatre in Toronto, a mid-sized venue in the mid-town area of Canada’s largest city.
Hallett says there’s a surprising gap in the Toronto market they are looking to fill.
He says despite having the healthiest theatre market, Toronto does not have a mid-sized venue. The Regent, which was an old Vaudeville theatre that had fallen on hard times, will fill that void.
Hallett says the Regent should open in 18 to 20 months.
