The residents of Marystown are growing increasingly frustrated as they live with the impact of the closure of the Canning Bridge, a span joining the north and south sides of the town.
The bridge was closed to vehicle traffic in February after failing inspection.
Work to replace the structure will take time, but residents are already dealing with the inconvenience and real economic impact of the closure.
Area MHA Jeff Dwyer presented a petition in the House of Assembly today, signed by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, asking government to “immediately begin the process of replacing the Canning Bridge.”
He says they want clear answers on timelines and hard copies on any reports on the bridge.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Elvis Loveless says he’s surprised by the petition because it encourages government to do something. He says when they received the report, they spoke with the mayor who was pleased with the response and Dwyer himself “patted me on the back for the response we were doing as a government.”
