The NDP MHA for Torngat Mountains wants Labrador to have its own regional health council under the new Provincial Health Authority, but she says her request has been denied.
Under the new system, different areas will be assigned a regional health council, which, except for eastern Newfoundland, will mirror the same boundaries as the previous health authorities.
Lela Evans says right now Labrador shares its resources with the Northern Peninsula.
Evans feels that specific regional concerns will not get be heard.
Evans claims that when she broached the issue with Minister Tom Osborne, she was told that implementing a health council for Labrador wouldn’t be a problem, but that changed before the vote took place.
She says she was preparing to take her seat in the House of Assembly when the Minister informed her that he request wouldn’t be possible, which she says was a “betrayal.”
Evans says she was told the reason for the decision comes back to people in the Minister for Labrador and Indigenous Affairs district being able to access the Northern Peninsula for health care.
“But what about the rest of the people in Labrador?” Evans asks. She wants everyone in Labrador to find a way to voice their opinions about the issue.
