Tomorrow marks the beginning of Volunteer Week.
Alyssa Blais, director of engagement and membership services with Volunteer Canada, says dwindling numbers are coming from a post-COVID world.
She says people’s lives and minds have changed, as has the work. She also believes that the cost of living right now is playing a factor. As well, lingering fear from the pandemic may also be playing a factor in peoples’ willingness to get out an volunteer.
Community Sector Council CEO Colin Corcoran says similar trends are being seen in this province.
He references their recent Volunteer Connections event, noting the importance of having conversations around what’s happening.
He says they need to figure out how to embrace the “new age of volunteerism” given the province’s unique geographical and population challenges.
