An adventurer from the province is planning his biggest expedition yet, aiming to travel 3,800 km in a year.
Newfoundland explorer Justin Barbour will leave Hudson Bay in northern Quebec this July canoeing, snowshoeing, backpacking and rafting his way to the southeast coast of Newfoundland.
His biggest objective is to complete the route in 12 months by his own power while experiencing and documenting all four northern seasons.
Barbour says he’s spent a lot of time over the past two and a half to three years preparing for the winter portion of the trip in Labrador.
He has spent about 100 days during the winter with temperatures as low as the minus 50’s, along with moving around with a lot of heavy clothing on and carrying a 320 pound toboggan.
Barbour says it’s been a dream of his ever since he struck ice in northern Quebec in 2018 on a 1,700 km journey; he told himself the next time the freeze-up comes, he’ll be ready.
