A local psychologist says the recent announcement expanding the scope of practice for pharmacists is especially good news for those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Dr. Janine Hubbard, President of the Association of Psychology Newfoundland and Labrador, says the ability for pharmacists to extend prescriptions for up to a year allows people with ADHD easier access to their medication if they do not have a family doctor.
Before, pharmacists could only provide up to a month-long extension to existing prescriptions, even less for some common stimulant drugs used to treat ADHD such as Adderall and Concerta.
Dr. Hubbard was one of a group of professionals who brought accessibility concerns to government last fall. She says the news comes as a relief to those who worry about running out of their medication.
In a statement, she says stable access will improve long-term mental and physical wellbeing of ADHD patients.
The provincial government will be covering the cost of prescription extensions.
