The NL Serious Incident Response Team has determined that an RCMP officer’s actions did not contribute to a fatal crash at Halfway Point in the Bay of Islands in March.

SIRT-NL Director Michael King says after reviewing the incident, they have determined that it does not fall within SIRT-NL’s mandate.

A 38-year-old woman died, and a 39-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving causing death following a single vehicle crash in Halfway Point early on the morning of Friday, March 31.

According to police, an officer saw a vehicle approaching head-on in the opposite lane. The officer swerved to avoid being hit, and then tried to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle sped away and the officer did not pursue due to public safety concerns. Minutes later, a 911 call came in about the crash on the Main Road.
