It will be another few months before the final project costs are announced now that Muskrat Falls has received formal commissioning confirmation from the financial parties.
NL Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams announced last week that the project was considered commissioned with successful testing on the Labrador Island Link.
Hydro says the NL System Operator has since accepted that the LIL performed according to accepted standards and is satisfied that it will operate reliably.
The independent engineer also concluded that the technical specifications are compliant with project financing requirements—a necessary part of the final commissioning process with the federal government and other project partners.
Formal commissioning occurred on April 14. Some critics feel the commissioning designation is premature as testing with a 900 MW load won’t be done until next winter.
Hydro is now reviewing project costs and is continuing to work with the provincial government to finalize rate mitigation. An update is expected in the coming months.
The formal process to commission the Labrador Island Link is now complete with receipt of a Commissioning Confirmation from the Financing Parties on April 14, 2023.
