The FFAW is calling for harsher regulation of processing companies after they say Grieg Seafood in Marystown reneged on promised work for the Burin Peninsula in favour of a non-union plant in Bay de Verde.
Grieg announced this week that it has entered an agreement with Quinlan Brothers for the processing of salmon at the company’s plant in Bay de Verde.
The union says despite millions in provincial funding and promised work to unionized members in OCI’s St. Lawrence plant, the work is being moved to the Avalon Peninsula instead.
FFAW President Greg Pretty says they are trying to build a meaningful industry on the Burin Peninsula, and Grieg chose to “roll back the clock on labour relations.”
