The vote by Gaultois residents on whether or not to take part in the government’s resettlement program has failed to secure the number needed to proceed.
The provincial government released the results of the contentious vote this afternoon.
Sixty-four per cent of those eligible voted in favour of relocation, while 36 per cent were oppposed.
The province has set 75 per cent or more as the threshold required to allow relocation to proceed.
Some residents were upset that those who had moved out of the community since the process was set in motion in April of 2022 were still able to vote on resettlement.
The deadline for ballots to be cast was April 6th, and the votes were counted by an independent third party on Friday, April 21st.
If more than 75 per cent of voters had chosen to resettle, the government would’ve provided between $250,000 and $270,000 to each property owner, depending on the number of people in the household, to help relocate.
