A well-known Newfoundland political cartoonist will be laid to rest in his beloved Salvage next week.
Peter Pickersgill passed away on April 15 at the age of 77.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Pickersgill was the son of MP Jack Pickersgill who represented the riding of Bonavista-Twillingate in the 1950s and 60s.
The younger Pickersgill had a long career as a political cartoonist with a variety of publications incuding the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa Journal, Le Devoir, in Hull, Quebec and the Toronto Star.
He made regular contributions to the Robinson-Blackmore family of community newspapers in Newfoundland and Labrador, his adopted home. He and his wife maintained a heritage property in historic Salvage, Bonavista Bay for four decades.
He published a number of books of his work, and also offered regular commentaries on CBC radio.
The funeral service will take place at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Salvage on Saturday, April 29.
