A controversial housing development in the Pleasantville area of St. John’s is back on city council’s radar today.
Last month, council voted to move forward with amendments to allow Newfoundland and Labrador Housing to develop four apartment buildings on a section of open space on Janeway Place.

Many area residents wrote the city in opposition to the development—citing things like the loss of a green space and decreased property values as their reasoning.
The city pushed forward, however, noting that the area is provincially owned and is not a formal recreational space. They believe the project is a good step in addressing the city’s housing issues.
Today, council will vote on whether or not to formally adopt the amendments. If that happens, a public hearing date will be set.
The tentative date for the hearing has been set for May 16th at 7 p.m.
