A curiosity in Carbonear has emerged in the midst of renovations to Water Street infrastructure.
During work on water and sewer upgrades in the historic downtown area, crews have uncovered previously unknown stone structures underneath the road infrastructure.
Carbonear Mayor Frank Butt says they appear to be tunnels or storage spaces of some kind. He says while he’s heard of rumours of tunnels under the town, they are unsure of the age or purpose of the mysterious structures.
He says some older folks in the town were telling him of tunnels either dug by pirates to hide their loot, or by residents to hide their valuables.
Mayor Butt believes the Carbonear Heritage Society have reached out for help in identifying the structures.
