The provincial government will soon be announcing the details of a pilot program for speed cameras in communities across the province.
The idea of installing such devices on the highways has long been talked about, with government passing amendments to the Highway Traffic Act back in 2019 to that effect.
Digital Government and Service NL Minister Sarah Stoodley couldn’t get too far into the details, but says they are working on pilots with some municipalities that will run through the summer.
She says when implementing speed cameras they need to make sure they work well in our climate. They’ll also be collecting data on how many people are speeding in these areas and how fast they’re going and the costs associated with it.
The pilot would also look at who is responsible for administering the tickets.
She reveals that the province is also looking at cameras on school buses. She says that isn’t included in the pilot project, but as an example on ticketing she says images captured on those cameras would fall under different jurisdiction depending on if it was on the highway or in a community. she says there are lots of “cogs in the wheel” for how it will work.
