A chef and restauranteur from this province is opening up about his diagnosis with type 2 diabetes in hopes of helping others.
Rodney Bowers, originally from Windsor but now living in Toronto, was diagnosed with the disease in 2022.
Since then, he’s had to make a number of lifestyle changes such as incorporating a healthier diet and exercise into his daily routine.
Bowers has been using his platform to educate others—especially people in his home province, where the rate of type 2 diabetes is one of the highest in the country.
As a Newfoundlander, the chef also considers himself to be a natural born storyteller. With so many people suffering from the same illness, he’s decided to open up about what works in helping him control his diabetes in in hopes that it will help someone else.
Bowers is still learning to live with diabetes through food and the use of diabetes technology such as a flash glucose monitoring system.
The diagnosis hasn’t been all negative as he’s been able to expand his culinary skills through new recipes that use artificial sweeteners like monk fruit.
He says the sugar cravings never go away, but alternatives have helped him satisfy his sweet tooth without risking his health.
