Hundreds of people have been sidelined by the stalemate in the crab fishery including 20 Filipinos who were brought to Newfoundland and Labrador for the very purpose of working in a crab plant. However, they are still in the province with fingers crossed that harvesters will reach an agreement with processors.
Work Global Canada, the St. John’s-based company which handled the move, says the Filipinos are doing well and are staying in Hickman’s Harbour. Spokesperson Wanda Cuff Young says there are no plans to send them back to the Philippines as they are looking at other opportunities for employment.
She is in frequent contact with the federal and provincial governments and there are programs to move them to other employers.
Cuff Young says the Flipinos have comfortable accommodations with all the necessary communications at their disposal.
