Newfoundland and Labrador is going high tech to catch people who speed on our roads.
Traffic cameras, which have been used in other provinces for some time, will be installed in Paradise and Mount Pearl this summer but only on a trial basis, meaning nobody will be ticketed, but will receive a notice for speeding. The information will be used to form a database to help determine how many people are speeding.
Paradise Mayor Dan Bobbett says they know they have a speeding problem and will place cameras on Karwood, Carlisle and Brougham Drive. Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker says they’re going to target Park Avenue, Blackmarsh off Team Gushue, and Michener Avenue.
He says the technology means that the Coyote is finally going to catch the Roadrunner.
There are still many details to be worked out, including who will get the revenue if and when the cameras become an active part of law enforcement and drivers are compelled to pay.
