Premier Andrew Furey was grilled by the opposition in the House of Assembly yesterday on the $681,917 spent by the English School District to fight the human rights complaint filed by the parents of Carter Churchill.
Earlier this year a Human Rights Commission ruled that Churchill had been discriminated against by the NLESD, which failed to provide proper educational instruction to the child.
A recent ATIPP request from the family revealed the bill for the legal services attained by the district.

Opposition Leader David Brazil questioned the Premier about that use of taxpayers funds.
Brazil asked who will be help accountable for the “disgraceful” treatment of the Churchill family.
Furey responded by saying that this is a school district issue that happened before he took office. He says government is sympathetic towards the family, and they are working on doing better. He calls it “unfortunate” that the money had to be spent in that way.
