The Privacy Commissioner is watching an investigation launched by federal Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne on Chat GPT, on whether the company obtained valid consent from Canadians in order to collect, use and disclose personal information.
Michael Harvey is not involved in the investigation but indicates its implications are important.
He says generative AI, like Chat GPT, creates content based on prompts, using information available on the internet.
Harvey says the privacy commissioners are most interested in whether or not it complies with privacy laws, however, there are also ethical concerns, especially when it comes to creative content and the spread of disinformation.
He indicates there are plenty of examples of people who are trying to sow disinformation, who have done so by generating news stories or images that look legit, about things that never happened.
Harvey cites a recent case involving an image purporting to show an explosion at the Pentagon, which never happened, yet still had an impact on the stock markets.
