A popular social media page that shares comedic posts and memes related to Newfoundland and Labrador is at risk of being shut down.
The Newfoundland Turnip, which has over 227,000 followers on Facebook, received a lengthy warning last week that the page was at risk of being shut down for good due to a number of “community standards” violations.
The man behind the page, known only as Mike, tells VOCM News his content follows Facebook’s rules, but there has been an increase in violations since he’s started posting popular cartoon skits.
Mike believes artificial intelligence may be the technology used that examines posts for possible violations—something that isn’t necessarily helpful when it comes to reviewing the Turnip’s content.
He has challenged some of the so-called violations and had them overturned within minutes, leading him to believe it was a human behind the decision. But recently, the page has received more red flags than ever from possible AI technology. Due to the unique nature and context of the memes he posts, Mike believes it takes a human to understand what is, and isn’t, appropriate.
The Turnip creator says he isn’t giving up on posting memes that attract thousands of likes and shares, but he has created a second account just in case the original is shut down. Mike says he’s also in the process of taking his comedy beyond social media.
He’s currently working on purchasing a domain and setting up a Newfoundland Turnip website to post his content and merchandise without running the risk of social media violations.
