The PC MHA for Stephenville—Port au Port says Marine Atlantic shouldn’t just delay a proposed fuel surcharge—they should outright cancel it.

Tony Wakeham says while the new tax has been pushed back until December, the current thirteen percent fuel charge remains.

Wakeham argues the cost to travel on Marine Atlantic is expensive as it is and calls on Ottawa to ditch the cost recovery method when it comes to essential services.

Residents have the right to the ferry service as a way to connect to the rest of Canada, he says, and believes it’s unfair for them to face higher fees than those in the Maritimes who use the Confederation Bridge.

Wakeham is calling on the premier to meet with the federal government to express concerns and ultimately make the ferry service more affordable.
