The province’s new tire recycling facility has opened in Conception Bay South.
It’s being operated by Coastal Tire Recycling. There, old tires are shredded and turned into what’s called a tire derived aggregate.
Director Bev Connell says in most cases the product is used as light weight fill.

For example, he says it can be used over the top of culverts. He notes that in all projects the aggregate must be completely covered over.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Bernard Davis says the province produces about 500,000 tires per year, and Connell has no doubt they can meet the demand.
Connell says they have the capacity to shred one million tires a year.
