Access to health care is one of the largest issues facing veterans in Newfoundland and Labrador.
That’s according to veterans who attended a town hall with the country’s Veteran’s Ombud Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine.
Other issues highlighted include wait times on disability claims, Veteran’s Affairs communications, and the review and appeal process.
Reg Rogers who served around 35 years in the navy, says the lack of access to a family doctor is putting up barriers to care.
He says if he has a disability and wants to make a claim, he has to have paperwork filled out by a doctor, however there is a lot of military jargon to wade through—something that with a shortage of doctors can make the already difficult search for a suitable physician even more difficult.
