Heavy rain the past day-and-a-half continues to cause washouts and flooding in certain sections of the Great Northern Peninsula.
The main road into Englee is closed after being eaten away by flood waters, and some homes in nearby Roddickton-Bide Arm.
Over 100 mm of rain has fallen in that area since early yesterday morning with another 30 mm to come today before things calm down tonight.
Roddickton-Bide Arm Mayor Ken Reid says three houses are completely surrounded by water and the road through town is closed. Mayor Reid cautions people to stay away from the area of the brook as transportation officials are on scene. They don’t yet know the extent of damage.
He says the shoulders have been washed away and bits of pavement are washing out into the ocean.
Repairs on roads in the town will begin once the water begins to recede. A helicopoter is being made available in the area in case of emergency.
Meteorologist David Neal says that area took the brunt of the system.
Most other areas on the peninsula got around 40mm as well as Mary’s Harbour in southern Labrador. LaScie on the Baie Verte Peninsula got about 50 mm.
Relief in Englee
The Mayor of Englee says the roads held up against flood waters yesterday and while more rain is in the forecast, the situation appears to have abated.
Stephanie Fillier says the road to Bide Arm however saw major flooding overnight and the road is currently impassable.
That’s a problem for residents of Englee who must travel to Roddickton-Bide Arm for health care and other services.
She says the hospital is in Roddickton-Bide Arm, as well as the pharmacy. Some residents travel to Roddickton-Bide Arm for work and while Englee has a grocery store, some people travel to the neighbouring community to shop as well.
