The FFAW is once again calling on the provincial government to take action to better regulate the seafood processing industry in light of what it calls a coordinated attack on small boat harvesters.
FFAW Secretary-Treasurer Jason Spingle alleges that processing companies are “engaging in unethical business behaviour” to the detriment of the small boat fleet.
He says the crab fishery may be open with a price agreement in place, but with no ability to sell for members of the small boat fleet, harvesters are still in crisis.
Spingle says harvesters understand the need to have a aced fishery to ensure quality and capacity, however companies are implementing harvesting schedules that he says are unfair to certain harvesters and fleets.
He says the fishery is expected to close in just a few short weeks, and even if the season extensions are granted, the possibility of all quota being landed this year is becoming less and less likely.
