Ditching a taxi service and taking an Uber could soon be a reality in parts of the province.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says the city has been working alongside the provincial government to update their regulations to prepare for the availability of ride share apps.
He told VOCM’s Open Line with Paddy Daly that he met with Uber in Toronto last week.
The mayor says the company is pleased with the progress the city is making while Uber continues to work with the province to launch their service.
Breen says they’re open to the idea of working with neighbouring municipalities to ensure everyone is on the same page in terms of taxi and ride sharing bylaws.
He says the rules would have to be adjusted for each jurisdiction as current bylaws that only extend to city limits would also apply to ride share services.
