Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey joined with his Atlantic Canadian counterparts for a meeting Monday of the Council of the Atlantic Premiers in PEI.
Among the topics up for discussion were climate change, action toward the green transition, and a call for the federal government to clarify the economic impacts of Clean Fuel Regulations, taking into account what they call the unique characteristics of the region, including supply constraints and the regulatory environment.
The federal carbon tax comes into effect in just a few weeks’ time, resulting in what the premiers call additional inflationary pressures on families and more vulnerable populations.
The premiers are urging the federal government to “re-examine its policies to ensure that Atlantic Canadians do not bear a heavier cost burden” than other Canadians.
Also up for discussion was health care, immigration, and virtual discussions with the country’s three northern territories to explore common challenges and shared priorities.
