The minister responsible is speaking out on the school board’s decision to spend over $700,000 to fight the discrimination case brought forward by the parents of a deaf student.
Last month, an ATIPP request revealed the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District spent $681,917 to defend itself on allegations that they failed to provide Carter Churchill with proper accommodations during his time at Beachy Cove Elementary. Updated information last week revealed that the cost was more like $750,000.
Education Minister John Haggie believes neither the province nor school board wanted to go to trial, but it did help “clear the air” on the allegations.
He says the tribunal showed that Churchill was now receiving the services needed and the family was compensated for any discrimination faced in the past.
Haggie says the human rights tribunal also allowed them to identify and accommodate a number of challenges faced by special needs students.
