SIRT-NL has confirmed that a man is dead and an officer was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries following a police-involved shooting in the capital city this morning.
The incident occurred in the area of the Regatta Plaza building just before 11:00 a.m. this morning. Regatta Plaza contains Immigration offices, Employment offices and a number of other businesses and agencies.
The Employment Centre in St. John’s is closed as a result, and mental health and crisis supports are available through the Employment Assistance Program.
SIRT-NL is in the process of locating and notifying next-of-kin and cannot release any further information at this time.
A civilian oversight investigation is automatic when a police officer discharges a weapon.
Anyone with information or video footage from the area of Regatta Plaza at the corner of New Cove Road and Elizabeth Avenue between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. today is asked to contact investigators at 738-7478 or by email at sirtinfo@sirtnl.ca.

SIRT-NL has launched an investigation into a police shooting incident on Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s this morning.
SIRT-NL is responded to the scene at Regatta Plaza and is conducting an investigation which is automatic when a police officer discharges a weapon.
