The mayor of an amalgamated town in eastern Newfoundland likes the idea of municipal reorganization through shared services instead of regionalization.
Government shelved the regionalization approach a few weeks ago, choosing instead to explore the possibility of sharing services.
New-Wes-Valley Mayor Mike Tiller says one of the benefits could be reducing overhead, particularly the cost of engineering, or consultant’s fees.
On a $1.6-million project, you could be paying upwards of $100,000 in consultant’s fees, he says. That money could cover the cost of an engineer for a year.
Having their own engineer would save government money time and time again, he says.
