Nearly seven years after the tragedy, a memorial to the lives of four men lost in a boating accident off St. John’s harbour will be unveiled this afternoon in Shea Heights.
The Walsh-Humby monument will be officially unveiled at the lookout in Shea Heights at 5:00 p.m.
Four men from Shea Heights—Eugene Walsh, his son Keith Walsh and grandson Keith Walsh Junior lost their lives, along with family friend Billy Humby while retrieving fishing gear in rough and windy conditions in September of 2016.
The loss rocked the close-knit community of Shea Heights.
Two of the four men lost were never recovered, something Jessie Wilkins says still resonates to this day.
He says the marble bench was made possible through a massive community effort.
He says the money was raised in a mere six weeks. He calls the monument “a great part of the community.”
