A search is underway off the coast of Newfoundland for a submersible involved in expeditions to the Titanic wreck site that has been reported missing.
The US Coast Guard in Boston says an operation is underway to find the submersible, operated by OceanGate Expeditions.
Reports indicate that five crewmembers are on board the untethered machine. OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush visited the VOCM studios in February to discuss the submersible and what goes into an expedition to the bottom of the ocean.
He told VOCM News the submersible was designed to be quiet while moving through the water.
Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Services, which owns and operates the Polar Prince which serves as a support vessel for OceanGate, tells VOCM News it is doing what it can to support the search and rescue effort and is working closely with authorities.
Premier Andrew Furey is offering his hope that the US Coast Guard successfully locates the sub and those on board very soon.
Thinking of all those affected, as we hope the U.S. Coast Guard successfully locates the sub and those on it very soon. Newfoundland and Labrador has a long-standing connection with the wreck of the Titanic, with tourists departing our harbour to visit the site off our shores. https://t.co/Xw5A3rQ5dz
