The Atlantic Premiers are requesting an immediate meeting with the Prime Minister over the federal government’s clean fuel regulations, something which they have long been saying will negatively impact the region.
On Wednesday, the Premiers say a follow-up meeting was held with Federal Environment and Climate change Minister, Steven Guilbeault.
The group reiterated their commitment to climate change and the various initiatives that they have put in place to prove that.
They say they have been waiting for weeks for information from the minister about options to reduce the impact of the regulations, however “no new information or possible solutions to mitigate impact” have been presented.
Further, they say the minister has not shared numbers about the potential impacts, which he says are different from those released by the independent Parliamentary Budget Office, despite “repeated requests.”
They say Guilbeault has previously confirmed that during the development of the regulations it was identified that they would have a disproportionate impact on Atlantic Canada. Despite this, the feds decided to move forward, which the Premiers deem “unfair and offensive to Atlantic Canadians.”
The Premiers are requesting a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, that he pause the regulations, and that an analysis on the impacts to the region be conducted so that the proper mitigation efforts can be put in place.
