A new book is exploring Newfoundland’s underground music scene and its relationship with social activism from the 1970s to the 1990s.
“Let it All Fall,” written by Mike Heffernan, explores the underground music scene and culture of rebellion on the island from 1977-95. The book highlights the response to conservative politics in the province through rebellion and the punk music soundtrack to it.
It uses the “Flemish Street Massacre” and the Peace Accord as key moments of discussion.
Heffernan says the book looks at an interesting period of time for youth culture in the province, one that is not often discussed.
He says it’s a story of how Newfoundland was going through an existential crisis during this time period and how the youth carved out their own identity and movement out of nothing.
