Whale Release and Strandings were called out to free a humpback whale in distress that was entangled in fishing gear
The group specializes in rescuing marine creatures, including whales, leatherback sea turtles, and basking sharks that find themselves entrapped or stranded along the coastline.
Following numerous reports from concerned individuals in the Bay Bulls – Witless Bay area, the elusive whale was finally located near Petty Harbour.
Julie Huntington, a member of the rescue team, says the whale was quite entangled in fishing gear which included two red buoys.
The whale had a lot of gear on it. The net was caught on the whale’s mouth and was wrapped around the tail several times. She said they were thoughtful and ready with a plan on how to disentangle the whale.
Huntington says they were able to get all the gear off and the whale went on. If you see a whale or marine animal in distress you can Whale Release and Strandings at 1-888-895-3003.
