The NDP is calling on government to provide sustained core funding to 2SLGBTQIA+ groups in the wake of rising hatred and threats of violence.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn cites a new report by Statistics Canada that shows transgender Canadians are more likely to have experienced violence since age 15 and more likely to experience inappropriate behaviour than cisgender Canadians. Canadians that do not identify as heteorsexual were also more likely to have seriously contemplated suicide, have poor mental health, and be diagnosed with a mood or anxiety disorder.
Dinn says government needs to show true allyship to a vulnerable community by providing core funding to groups that support the queer community, such as Quadrangle NL. He says marginalized people should not be overworking themselves to prove how crucial their work is and calls on the minister responsible to commit the funds to the cause.
