The NDP says, in some cases, the cost of rent is out of control and they’re calling on the provincial government to step in and help put the lid on things.
Leader Jim Dinn says he has on his desk a case in which a tenant has been notified of an increase of over 60 percent. He also says some constituents, many of them seniors, are facing multi-year increases with no relief.
Dinn says chronic homeless has doubled from May of last year to May of this year going to 175 from 86. He’s calling on the minister responsible for housing to improve rent controls.
He believes that government should move away from subsidizing market housing and focus on community and public housing.
He says right now, market housing, which is driven by landlords seeking profit, has taken over.
