Over 100 athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador are preparing to compete in the 2023 North American Indigenous Games in Halifax next week.
The nine day event will bring together more than 5,000 athletes, coaches, and team staff from over 756 Indigenous Nations.
Team Indigenous NL athletes, aged 13 to 19, will be competing in various sports including golf, swimming, volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, badminton, and athletics.
Minister Lisa Dempster will participate in the opening ceremony and walk with the team.
The opening ceremony takes place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax this Sunday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. (ADT), and can be watched online.
The event will feature 16 sports in 21 venues, with over 3,000 volunteers involved. The North American Indigenous Games aim to celebrate Indigenous culture and promote unity through sports.
