Students at Memorial University are describing the provincial government’s allocation of $10 million to reduce campus fees as a drop in the bucket, falling well short of what is really required.
Government announced the fee subsidy yesterday, saying the move shows its commitment to post secondary education and will provide relief to thousands of students.
The Memorial University Students Union wishes for government simply to restore the $68 million cut in the university’s operating grant, which led to an increase in tuition fees.
Education Minister Krista Lynn Howell says the reduction in campus fees will apply for the campus year 2023-24.
She says it’s part of their commitment to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador maintains its position as one of the most affordable post secondary education systems in Canada.
MUNSU Executive Director for Internal Affairs, John Harris, says it’s a step in the right direction, but they want government to restore the $68 million it previously cut.
He says while the funds do help, with the cost of living right now it doesn’t do much.
