The Canada-Newfoundland Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board says it appreciates the concerns of the FFAW regarding offshore drilling. But the C-NLOPB, which oversees such activity, insists ExxonMobil is in compliance with all conditions of environmental assessments, operations authorizations, as well as consultation.
On Friday, crab harvesters on the Avalon Peninsula called out the oil and gas industry, with specific reference to the Hercules drill rig, operated by ExxonMobil in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin, claiming it’s in direct conflict with traditional, prime fishing grounds.
They say they were given “little to no advance” notice of drilling programs, adding they should stop during peak fishing time, and in an already very difficult year, going back to the lengthy dispute over prices.
In its response on Saturday, the C-NLOPB stated all operators must comply with all conditions of their licence, including consideration of environmental protections, adding “we can confirm that ExxonMobil is in compliance.”
The statement noted both ExxonMobil and the FFAW have been directly engaged in meetings in recent months, adding a fisheries communications plan was provided to the union which requires regular updates on drill programs.
The Hercules rig has most recently been anchored off Bay Bulls.
FFAW president Greg Pretty hasn’t ruled out the possibility of an at-sea protest over the issue.
