A recent incident at Gros Morne National Park is drawing into question the accessibility of Parks Canada locations.
A caller to VOCM Open Line with Tim Powers last week highlighted the difficulty she had while staying in the park, as she was not permitted to use her motorized scooter on a trail, needed for mobility.
Instead, the park offered her an “all-terrain” wheelchair, however when she went to join a boat tour, she was unable to traverse the trail in the chair.
The Executive Director for the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities NL says the whole ordeal demonstrates a lack of equality for people with disabilities.
Nancy Reid says at the beginning of the conversation, the lady had her motorized scooter, that she should have been allowed to use on the trail, no questions asked.
She says she was denied access based on her disability, which is an infringement on her human rights.
