RCMP do not expect to lay charges at this time in connection to recent fake tips that were provided to Crime Stoppers.
The Director of Strategic Communications, Glenda Power, says two different tips were recently received by the organization that prompted an urgent response from the force, thus tying up resources that could be needed for legitimate issues.
Power urges people to use the service “in good faith,” noting that intentionally providing false tips could result in criminal charges.
Crime Stoppers NL board chair Rod Pike clarifies that they are not talking about people who, with good intent, provide a tip that turns out to be nothing.
He says they are referring to people who are intentionally trying to mislead police and divert their resources.
