In an effort to address the issue of unresolved safety recalls, Transport Canada is proposing new regulations that would obligate automakers to swiftly publish recall information on their websites.
The move comes as the federal government raises the alarm over approximately 6.6 million vehicles currently on the roads with unresolved safety recalls.
According to an analysis by Transport Canada, one out of every five vehicles registered as of 2019 has outstanding recalls. This situation presents potential hazards not only to the occupants of these vehicles but also to other road users.
To mitigate this risk, the department is advocating for new rules that would necessitate automakers to promptly share recall information on their websites. Furthermore, they would be required to provide a lookup tool for vehicle inspection numbers, aiming to make recall information more accessible to vehicle owners.
The Canadian Automobile Association cautions that awareness of these recalls is still limited, particularly among owners of second-hand cars. And while many of these recalls may not be urgent or life-threatening, their unresolved status continues to pose safety concerns.
