There is panic and angst in the Ukrainian community as notices of eviction from hotel accommodations hit their due date but with a housing crunch in metro, it is difficult for anyone to find a place to stay at an affordable price.
The notices are from the Association for New Canadians but NDP Leader Jim Dinn places no blame on that group. He says the provincial government failed in its duty to follow the process all the way through from the Poland Help Desk, which recruited Ukrainians, to ensuring proper housing for them them once they arrive in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dinn is calling on government to revoke the evictions and establish a proper housing plan—even if that means a community of modular homes.
“I would say that volunteers are doing more to help Ukrainians find a place to stay than has government. This should not be left to volunteers,” he says. He wants to see a coordinated strategy on the part of government.
The Department says the ANC are taking the lead, but only those who have found full-time employment or have the financial means to move out have done so.
